Pamba Toto is a for-profit business that exists to benefit orphans in Kenya who have been rescued from the relentless poverty and disease of Nairobi’s slums. Pamba Toto donates profits from the sale of hand-crafted items made in Kenya and in the USA to Hope’s Promise the US non-profit which support these children in the loving family of Sanctuary of Hope (SoH) in Kenya.
Debbie Lee and Colleen Briggs, Pamba Toto co-founders, helped Hope’s Promise open the first SoH home for ten children in 2006. Their dear Kenyan friends, Pastor and Mama Karau, became the house parents for SoH#1 and also the Country Coordinators for Hope’s Promise-Kenya. Soon after, the two friends birthed Pamba Toto to generate funds for SoH.
Pamba Toto encompasses various lines including jewelry and housewares made by the SoH children; textiles and jewelry produced by economic development projects for women in slums; Azizi jewelry made by Colleen with an emphasis on fair-trade components; and products created by other Kenyan artisans.
From its inception through today, Pamba Toto’s goals remain the same:
- generate funds for Hope’s Promise SoH homes so that orphans can be rescued and raised in a family that shows them the love of Jesus,
- support economic development for international artisans, particularly those in the developing world and especially in Africa, giving them the opportunity and dignity of earning income and supporting their families,
- provide the buyer with quality, unique, hand-made items (jewelry, textiles, and home decoration) that celebrate the original Creator of beauty, while raising awareness of SoH.
A very special project in 2014 was the “SoH Heart Painting.” Penny Taylor, a good friend of Hope’s Promise and Pamba Toto, served with a Hope’s Promise Connection Team in Kenya. Pamba Toto sent paint and canvas with her to Kenya, and she worked with each SoH child to paint a heart in a section of the painting. She christened the artwork “Many Hearts, One Family.” As Pamba Toto sells fine art giclee prints of the piece, profits directly benefit the young artists!
